Stuttering- Triggers.

In my previous post i was discussing what i think the cure for stuttering is. I really believe that the cure is confidence. The more confident you become the less you stutter. But it is possible to be confident but still stutter. How does that happen?
This is the question that i will be dealing with in this post.
There is an answer to that question. Let me use myself as an example. I had been applying the steps i have been sharing with you, like changing how i see myself, getting rid of the labels people put on me, being a man of conviction and others. I was really seeing change. I was really excited. But as months went on i still stuttered. It was confusing not to mention frustrating. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what was going on.

But then i saw it. One day i saw a pattern. There were times where i was confident and other times when i was not. Those times i was not were almost the same all the time. I could see the pattern clearly. The times i stuttered the most was when i was talking to people who had authority. God showed me that the abuse from my dad is what caused me to stutter. My dad was the authority head in the family and as a young boy i became scared of him which caused me to stutter. Fast forward a few years and i saw how i was scared of people in authority. I had no confidence in front of teachers, coaches, and bosses. I never knew how to relate to them. I could not communicate with them especially if that authority head was harsh. That was just the worst.
So picture this: I am at school and i am afraid of people in authority which in this case is my teacher and headmaster and prefect. My teacher asks me to read something which i stutter through. The teacher doesn’t understand stuttering so he ridicules me which encourages the students to also make fun of me. That is how i can describe a large chunk of what school was like for me.
But that all started because of what i experienced at home. That was a trigger and it had to dealt with.
What are your triggers? What are the things that cause you to stutter? You need to deal with them and get over them. If you are confident but you stutter then you have a trigger or triggers. It is possible to have more than one. I had two main triggers. If you need help please don’t hesitate to ask me. I will help where i can. The important thing is to confront it face on. That’s what i did. I will be writing about different ways you can do that. Some of the steps that i have written can help you. You are not alone in this.

The other trigger for me was reading. I would stutter whenever i would read. And that was because of what happened at school. People made fun of me when i would read. So when i started working i would avoid reading in public like a plague. If i did read i would stutter which solidified even more why i should not read. No one laughed straight to my face but i would think they were laughing. I was highly critical of everyone i met. In the back of my mind i would think they were all laughing at me. It was bad. And that also had to be dealt with. I am much better now. Those triggers are gone but i have work at keeping them that way. Do i fall at times, yes! There are times when i don’t apply what i have learnt. But those times are rare and getting more rare by the day.

The triggers in your life can be abolished. But it takes time and support. You can’t do this by yourself. Ask God to show you what the triggers are in your life. That is what He did for me. I had no one to help me. But God was there. And He can do the same for you. I am also here to help you.
All you have to do is ask.
I hope this post helped. If you have any questions just ask me. If you need help i will do the best that i can. If you have anything to contribute please feel free to post it. That ends my post on triggers and i look forward to hearing from you.

Stuttering- What can cure it?

I have been giving a few suggestions on what will help you stop stuttering. These suggestions are not things i made up but are things that i have tried and have seen work. I don’t stutter anymore. When i do it’s rare. I still use these principles that i am teaching you. As you now know, i believe stuttering can be stopped. I seen it in my life. And that is why i am here. When i stuttered in the past there was no one to help me. I was made fun of by people who didn’t understand. But i want to change that. I want you to know that you are not alone in this. There are people who understand what you going through. There is a way.

I have also realised that i have not told you what i believe the cure is. I have been giving you suggestions on how you can stop but i have never actually told you what the cure is. So in this post i will be addressing that.
I was physically abused as a child. That had an affect on my speech. I have been a stutterer as long as i can remember. And it wasn’t easy. By the end of it all i had no self-esteem. My confidence had been destroyed, totally! But God intervened and helped me. If it wasn’t for His help i don’t know where i would be today.

Down the years i realised how there was a direct correlation between my self-esteem and my improvement! The more confident i became in who i was the less i stuttered. My confidence grew and grew until i stopped stuttering completely! I couldn’t believe it. And that is what i believe the cure is- having confidence and a high self-esteem.
It’s having a confidence in who you are and having a confidence in who God says you are. Do you know who you are in God? Do you know what He says about you? These are all important questions that need to be answered. There is a story in the word that backs up what i am saying. That story is in Exodus and it’s about Moses. It’s believed that he stuttered. (Exo 4:10)

God then sends him his brother Aaron to speak on his behalf because Moses can’t see fluency. All he sees is his speech impendment. Maybe he had been ridiculed by his friends. Maybe he had been told what a wierdo he was because of the way he spoke. Maybe he had tore himself down so much because of it. But whatever the reason, it made him just see stuttering. Even when God assured him He would be with him he still said no.
(And the Lord said to him, Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the dumb, or the deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Is it not I, the Lord?
Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and will teach you what you shall say.
And he said, Oh, my Lord, i pray You, send by the hand of [some other] whom You will [send].
Then the anger of the Lord blazed against Moses; He said, Is there not Aaron your brother, the Levite? I know he can speak well. Also, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be overjoyed. Exo 4:11-14)

Is that the way you see as well? Do you just see stuttering? People may be telling you how much potential you have and the things you going to do but all you see is stuttering! That needs to change.
Anyway let’s move on. Aaron is now speaking on behalf of his brother Moses. Moses tells him what to say and Aaron then speaks. That was the arrangement.
But then we see a change. In exodus 8:9 we see Moses speaking to Pharoah! We also see a change in the way things are supposed to be.
In Exodus 7:19 it reads; And the Lord said to Moses, say to Aaron, Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt,
This is the way things are supposed to be, this is the arrangement. Nothing wrong with that right. But the change comes one verse later.
In Exodus 8:1 it reads; Then the Lord said to Moses, Go to Pharoah and say to him, Thus says the Lord, Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
Did you see that? God tells Moses to talk to Pharoah instead of telling Aaron to go and speak. Then later on in the chapter we read:
Moses said to Pharoah, Glory over me in this; dictate when I shall pray [to the Lord] for you, your servants, and your people, that the frogs may be destroyed from you and your houses and remain only in the river. Exodus 8:9

Moses is now speaking to Pharoah directly! What has changed? I believe Moses came to a realisation that God was true to His word. I believe Moses was confident because he finally believed what God said about him.
I believe our confidence comes from knowing who we are in God. Can you apply this if don’t know Christ? I don’t know the answer to that question. The steps i write about can be used by anyone i guess. They are very practical steps anyone can use. So if you don’t believe in God and you struggle with stuttering, you can still use the steps. But my desire is that you come to know God. He is the Saviour of the world. He is the One that saved me. Without Him i would not be where i am today. And i want you to know that He does care about you. You just have to invite Him into your life.

So that is what i believe about stuttering. Confidence is the answer. It is the cure, or can i say it helps in the process of being cured. One thing i don’t want you to be is narrow minded when it comes to the cure. This is what has worked for me. Something else may have worked for someone else. It’s just a matter of time before you find out other ways. I know for a fact that there are people who have stopped stuttering. You just have to find them out. For now i encourage you to apply the principles i am still going to teach you. Use the ways i talk about. They will make a difference in your life. Remember and never forget that stuttering is not for life.

Stuttering- Eliminate the “grasshoppers”.

I have already spoken about getting the right picture about yourself. Especially if you stutter. We always move towards the strongest picture in our minds. That’s a fact. So if your picture is one of people making fun of you and of you stuttering then that is what you gravitate towards. Change the negative picture at all costs. If change is to come then you need to eliminate the grasshoppers! I won’t lie about the work. It’s not easy. It requires you to be committed to the process. You will need to also deal with the negative beliefs that you have about stuttering. Some people believe that there is no cure for stuttering. How wrong they are. I am testimony that you can stop stuttering. It is possible.
Someone in regard to beliefs said that, it’s not a money or a weight problem that we have but a belief problem. For some of us we have a big belief problem. We need to examine our beliefs because if they are negative they drastically limit our potential and our progress. Lets get back to getting rid of the “grasshoppers”. You might be wondering what i mean by that. I got that statement after reading Numbers. There is a very interesting story in chapter thirteen. Let me give you a brief summary of the story. The Israelites have finally reached the promise land. But before they enter they scout out the promise land. They select twelve spies who are supposed to scout out the land and return with a report. Sure enough they go and bring back an evil report. Well ten of the twelve bring an evil report while two of the twelve bring back a good report. Anyway the ten spies are telling the Israelites what they have seen. So this is where i would like to pick up the story.

Numbers 13:33- There we saw the Nephilim [or giants], the sons of Anak, who come from the giants; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers and so we were in their sight.

This is the essence of “grasshopper” thinking. How do you think when everything is going well? It’s pretty ok to think correctly when things are smooth but what happens when the challenges come? What happens when people make fun of you and ridicule you? What happens to the way you think in that situation?
I was seeing progress as i was applying all i am teaching you now. The one area i was really struggling in was when people would say something bad about the way i stuttered. My thoughts would go awol. They would go really crazy. But i got that in check as i stopped bringing myself down.
Look at the last part of that verse. “we were in our sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight”.
When the ememy came we see how they really saw themselves. That is what trials and challenges do, they make it very clear how we see ourselves.
When the trials and challenges come you need to hold on to the right picture. Don’t let challenges that you face change how you see yourself. You need to fight to keep the right picture. Eliminate the “grasshoppers” at all costs.

The Israelites paid a heavy price because they didn’t hold on to the right picture. Because they listened to the ten spies negative report instead of Joshua and Caleb’s positive report they lost the promise land! So close yet so far. They lost their promise because they focused on the wrong thing.
Just something else to note: watch who you are allowing to shape the way you see. Choosing the right people will determine whether you succeed or fail in changing the way you see yourself. So with all that, i encourage you to eliminate the grasshoppers. Hold on to the positive picture dispite the challenges that come your way. Remember that it’s a fight to hold on to the right picture.
I really believe that you can stop stuttering. Change those negative beliefs. Create the new picture. See yourself as talking fluently.
And that is what it means to eliminate the grasshoppers!

How to stop stuttering-What do you see. Part 2

In this second part i am concluding what i spoke about in my previous post. What do you see? I hope you can see the importance of changing the way you see. I hope you have taken a look at yourself and asked yourself some hard questions. This question is for everyone and not just a selected few.

We need to learn to see what we want happen in our lives. But it doesn’t just stop there. There is work that needs to be done. You have a part to play in the story of your life. There has been a lot of false teachings about how you just need to visualise what you want and it will happen. “Just visualise what you want happen and it will happen, they say”.
Please understand that it does not stop there. You have a part to play in your success. Its you that is responsible for your life. As God leads you He wants you to be responsible. He wants you to trust in Him and then act in faith. That negative picture in your mind is not going to change by itself.
You need to play your part by renewing your mind with the Word. Deliberately set high goals for yourself. If you want to be a pilot go for it. If you want to be a lawyer you can do it. If you desire to walk in fluency you can. God is with you. Dare to dream crazy big dreams! Don’t be afraid to dream big.
It’s imperative that your picture is positive. It’s important that your picture is so big that it scares you because,
You gravitate towards the strongest picture in your mind.
It has been proven that as humans we are drawn to the strongest picture in our minds. For example, a man who has been told he is stupid and will never amount to anything will stay in that place until he changes how he sees himself.
What is the strongest picture in your mind? Is stuttering stronger than fluency? If so, that needs to be changed. Is failure stronger than success? Is sickness stronger than health? Is impurity stronger than purity? All these negative mindsets need to be changed. You cannot afford to have them. They will be detrimental to your growth as a person. Ask God to show you the strong negative pictures that you gravitate towards.
Once He does, ask Him to help you change them.

I hope that helped. You are destined for great things. Open your eyes and see all that God has for you because He has so much in store. There are a lot more principles that i need to share with you that i know once you apply will help you tremendously.
Stay blessed.
